Security, Assistant Security Manager, Full Time
The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period, industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.

Reporting to the Director of Security, this full time, non-exempt position assists in the operation of the Security Department.
Requires excellent judgment; strong communication, writing and computer skills and effective communication, negotiation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Two years of active security at a museum or cultural property and/or civilian or military law-enforcement is recommended. Position requires ability to pass a background check and drug test. It is expected that the Assistant Security Manager will develop the necessary skills and obtain training and education to be promoted to a Security Manager. Experience coordinating emergency medical and security-related incidents preferred.
The Assistant Security Manager must live within a 30-minute drive time to the Museum and be able to respond to emergencies. Professional attire including a business suit will be worn most working days. A valid California driver’s license and personal automobile insurance are required.
- Learn all aspects of the security operations and assist as directed
- Ensures visitor and staff safety and security; provides first aid services as necessary
- Assists in the supervision of Security Officers and Gallery Attendants
- Assists with providing appropriate training and development of security staff
- Assists with preparation of incident and investigative reports
- Assists with investigating patron and staff complaints
- Conducts audits of security programs to ensure compliance with applicable policies and related codes
- Conducts periodic safety inspections of security equipment and security assessments of Museum grounds
- Continually assesses the effectiveness of security policies, procedures and operations, and the condition of security/fire equipment
- Assists with special projects as needed
Performance of essential functions requires regular moderate physical mobility and exertion in walking, prolonged standing, lifting, and the ability to remain alert at all times. Work may require strenuous physical activity related to responding to emergencies or alarms. Job duties require working indoors, outdoors and in inclement weather. Must be able to climb stairs, walk on hillsides and uneven terrain.
Work schedule involves extended day and hours including evening, weekend hours and some holidays.
