The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.

The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Summary

Reporting to the Director of Security, this non-exempt full-time position is part of the security management group and has defined supervisory responsibilities; conducts patrols, monitors the property and assists in the operation of the Security Department.

Qualifications

Position requires excellent judgment; good communication and computer skills; ability to communicate professionally and tactfully with Museum patrons and staff from all organizational levels.  Position requires the ability to work under pressure and to react appropriately to any situation.  Must be skilled at multi-tasking and performing simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities.  Must be certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Red Cross or be able to acquire this certification within one year of hire date. Must live within a 30-minute drive time to the Museum. A valid California driver’s license and personal automobile insurance are required.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Security and the Security Management group with all operations of the Security Department
  • Depending on the needs for each shift, the Security Supervisor may work any position in the uniformed security deployment or may work inside the museum handling a limited scope of duties normally assigned to a Security Manager
  • Tasks assigned to the Security Supervisor will vary and change according to the needs of the Museum
  • Ensures the safety and security of visitors, employees, and contractors, the Museum collection and monitors security employee performance and all areas of the premises

Physical Requirements

This position requires excellent eyesight, use of a computer in a seated position, moderate physical lifting, twisting, walking, climbing stairs, prolonged standing, and the ability to remain alert at all times. Work may require strenuous physical activity related to responding to emergencies or alarms. Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to 30 pounds. 

Schedule

Weekly schedule is five, eight-hour days, and may vary according to Museum needs and Manager availability. Security Supervisor must be able to work evening and weekend hours, including some holidays.
