Join artist and educator Richard Houston for a six-session course investigating how artists work with light and value. In the visual arts, value is the relative amount of light and darkness perceived by the eye. Learn the basic principles of value and analyze how these principles apply to works from various periods of art history. All classes are held in the Museum galleries, where students work from masterworks in the permanent collection. The final two weeks explore Rembrandt’s approach to light and value in conjunction with a special loan from The National Gallery, London, Rembrandt’s Self Portrait at the Age of 34. Students examine how artists in the 19th and 20th centuries handle light and value.
Students view paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Édouard Vuillard, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

- All levels of experience are welcome. Each class is $25 ($20 for members), and space is limited to 20 participants. All materials and admission to the galleries on the day of class are included.
