Summary

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, this part-time position is responsible for inspecting and maintaining the physical operations of the Museum, including HVAC/environmental systems, mechanical systems, plumbing and electrical infrastructure. The Maintenance Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the facility operates safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Qualifications

This position requires excellent judgment, strong attention to detail, effective communication, and strong computer skills. A minimum of two years of building engineer experience is required, with preference given to work history in museums. Knowledge of direct digital controls, building automation, security systems, construction and audiovisual systems is highly desirable. Addressing environmental system alarm notifications using a laptop computer and/or smartphone is necessary. A valid California driver’s license, proof of personal automobile insurance, and local residency required.  Uniforms provided by the Museum must be worn when on duty.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and oversees all aspects of building maintenance systems including HVAC / environmental / building system, electrical, plumbing, roofing, and outdoor water features
  • Monitors and responds to building automation and environmental system alarms
  • Provides support for technology-related systems including network and theater equipment
  • Assists the Conservator and Preparators on curatorial assignments as needed
  • Responds to facility-related emergencies and incidents, including after-hours as needed

Physical Requirements

This position requires heavy lifting, bending, stretching, reaching, moving objects, and manual dexterity. Position also requires extensive walking and standing indoors, outdoors, and in occasional inclement weather. Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to 50 pounds.

Schedule 

Work days include Friday through Sunday, up to 28 hours per week and will require occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours. Alarms and emergencies may require physical presence at the Museum at any hour, addressing environmental system alarm notifications using a laptop or computer when necessary.
