Buddha Shakyamuni
c. 200
Asia: Pakistan; Asia: Gandhara
On View

This impressive sculpture portrays the classic type of standing Buddha figures popular during the Kushan Period (1st-3rd century) in what is today Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan. Characteristic of the Gandharan school, the Buddha's monastic robes bear a strong resemblance to a Greek toga, with prominent folds concealing much of the Buddha's body. Likewise, the head and facial features are classically rendered, and the hair is depicted as wavy strands that form an elegant pattern as it covers his cranial bump of wisdom (ushnisha).
