Odalisque
c. 1830-1835
Not on View

The depiction of a languid young woman displaying her charms is part of a long artistic tradition. In the nineteenth century, however, the treatment became more candidly erotic. We partake of the mood of tranquil reverie, listen to the murmuring fountain, smell the smoke of tobacco, and touch the sensuous fabrics surrounding her. A series of horizontal and vertical accents organize the composition, providing a contrast to the sensuous curves of the odalisque.
