The Pont de L'Estacade, Paris
c. 1880-1884
On View

A pupil of Corot, Lépine participated in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. His favorite subjects were the bridges and barges of the river Seine, which he painted with unusual delicacy and freshness.

This view of the Pont Neuf looks west from a spot on the Left Bank opposite the Île de la Cité. The rooftops of the Louvre are just visible beyond the bridge at the center of the composition.

This view of the Pont de l’Estacade appears to have been a study, completed outdoors, for a much larger picture exhibited at the Salon in 1885. It takes up a position farther east along the Left Bank. At left appears the tip of the Île Saint-Louis, while the bridge itself, still under construction, occupies the center of the scene.
