Sportsmen in a Tavern
c. 1735
Justus Juncker (German, 1703-1767)
Not on View

Juncker was a German by birth, but studied under several Dutch masters. He copied the works of de Wyck, de Heem and van Huysum, among others, and his style reflects the detailed realism of these artists.

This painting provides unique insight into the common social character of the period. The unsettling perspective is balanced by the inherent stability of the low-ceilinged room and the triangular positioning of the figures. Juncker was particularly renowned for his portrait studies. The men, in their smoking and drinking, have been faithfully recorded as individual characters in the scene.
