Mellingen IV
1916
Lyonel Feininger (American, 1871-1956)
Not on View

The buildings and figures have the same nervous, expressive lines that Feininger used in his earlier etched works. His color was applied sparingly, on a wet ground, to achieve the soft, atmospheric effects. Mellingen is a Thuringian village near Weimar. The inscription in the lower left reads: "Das Dichten ist schwer, das Malen um so mehr" [Poetry is difficult, painting more so].
