Dwan Gallery was one of a handful of prominent galleries on La Cienega Boulevard that introduced artists from the New York school and promoted the local avant garde. In the mid-1960s, the gallery showed works by Robert Rauschenberg and Larry Rivers, among others, and for a selection of these shows, the artists made drawings for offset lithographs to promote the exhibition. While the offset process had been used for decades for commercial purposes, such artists as June Wayne were using the technique to make fine-art prints. This lithograph was intended for promotional purposes, yet its authorship, together with the quality of the paper and the printing, reminds us that printmaking is a technique that toes the line between fine art and commerce.
