Best known for his large-scale paintings, Ellsworth Kelly was above all dedicated to capturing the forms of the world around him using fields of color. Reducing architectural and natural elements to their simplest shapes and contours, Kelly’s paintings pack a powerful punch, whether representational or abstract. Here, with just a few strategic lines, Kelly portrays David McCorkle, one of two American friends who traveled with him to Paris in the fall of 1964. This reductive portrait is one of many by Kelly that capture the handsome features of the young man.
