Self-Portrait
1966
Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987)
Not on View

Warhol understood the phenomenon of the cult of personality as it played out in popular culture—if a face appears often enough, everyone will start to recognize it. Self-Portrait was published by the Leo Castelli Gallery to announce Warhol’s exhibition there in 1966. Rather than using an image of an artwork from the exhibition, Warhol created a promotional poster with his own visage. By doing so, he inserted himself into the pantheon he was creating, alongside Elvis, Brando and Marilyn.
