A native of Southern California, Ed Moses was a leader of abstract painting in the region. Alongside such artists as Ken Price, Billy Al Bengston, John Altoon and Ed Ruscha—many of whom congregated at the legendary Ferus Gallery in the late 1950s—Moses contributed to the artistic invention that was exploding in Los Angeles. His fellowship at Tamarind occurred around the time these same Los Angeles–based artists were making their way to the venerable workshop in Hollywood to try their hands at printmaking. While there, Moses continued to pursue his interest in the processes and materials of his work, which resulted in the first three-dimensional lithographs. To achieve these, the artist printed a keystone image, which was then cut with a razor. The image remained attached by three tabs that were folded to stand up a quarter inch away from the surface of the paper.
