Ken Price was born and raised in Los Angeles, and his success as an artist was deeply connected to the rise of his native city as a viable art center. Price studied under Peter Voulkos and worked alongside John Mason (both of whom have work on exhibit in the Museum’s sculpture garden). Together, these three artists redefined the use of clay by wresting the material away from its typical association with craft production and deploying it toward the discovery of the aesthetic concerns of the day. Price’s subjects range from richly colored biomorphic forms to surreal creations of cups and mugs in the shapes of animals, which toe the line between functional and fine art. As a printmaker, he continued these motifs, and his work at all three of the major Los Angeles workshops—Tamarind, Gemini and Cirrus—reflects the close integration of his print work into his entire oeuvre.
