Stimulated by Bavarian folk art and the artistic communities she helped build—the German expressionist groups Neue Künstlervereinigung München (NKVM) and Der Blaue Riter—Gabriele Münter portrayed traditional subjects with singular style. Here, her expressive brushwork and dark palette gives everyday objects an air of mystery. Summarily treated, the elements in her still life are reduced to specters, with the large ghostly white vase contrasted by the dark silhouettes of the religious figurines from her collection of folk art.
