Long Modern Sculpture is an example of Lichtenstein’s “Modern” sculpture series, begun in 1967. The machine-like precision and patterned repetition of geometric forms draw from the ornamental Art Deco style of the 1930s. Linear and circular patterns repeat throughout this elongated sculpture, mimicking a brass railing from New York’s Radio City Music Hall or the elements of a Frank Lloyd Wright design. Based on features from Art Deco style architectural design, the series maintains itself as fine art by denying any useful purpose.
Long Modern Sculpture essentially has only two sides. Lichtenstein saw sculpture as being two-dimensional since, as a viewer moves around an artwork, he or she can only see it from one angle at a time.
