White over Blue

Ellsworth Kelly (American, 1923-2015)
Not on View

Kelly switched from figurative to abstract art while he was living in Paris in 1949. In the 1950s, he began working in his now familiar style of flatly painted canvases, the antithesis of the general brushwork style that dominated American abstraction at the time. Kelly's paintings are typically very clear and simple in construction, sometimes consisting of a number of individual panels placed together, similar in size but painted a different color. White over Blue is an example of these monumental panel pictures, featuring a solid white, rectangular canvas that is hung just slightly in front of an identically sized blue panel.
