H. C. Westermann was born in Los Angeles but ultimately settled in Chicago after studying there at the Art Institute. Primarily known as a sculptor, Westermann was a complete iconoclast. He rejected artistic convention through his carefully constructed wood works and hastily sketched drawings and prints, which straddled the American pop, surrealist, assemblage and craft traditions. Westermann also possessed a sharp wit, and he often unleashed his irreverent humor on contemporary social and cultural mores. For example, in this portfolio, inspired by a road trip taken with his wife across the country, the artist has inflected the American landscape with lewd and erotic imagery in pursuit of that cause.
