Changes in Composition from Renaissance to Mannerism

Jacopo Bassano (Italian, 1510–1592), The Flight into Egypt, c. 1544–45, oil on canvas, Norton Simon Art Foundation

DATE:
TIME:
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
SPEAKER:
Museum Educator

Dive deeply into works in the Renaissance and Mannerist collections to learn how artists used light and composition to move away from complete naturalism to stylistic representation. Notice how the central image in Raphael’s Madonna and Child with Book and Jacopo Bassano’s The Flight into Egypt is the same, but the figures, landscapes and movements all come together to create two very different scenes.
