All Consuming: Art and the Essence of Food, Bite-Sized Edition

FOOD AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Edward Weston

This selection of photographs depicting 20th-century California and Mexico brings the exhibition’s themes closer to home. Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Edward Weston were mutual admirers who moved in the same artistic circles. Though their images share both surreal and documentary qualities, they approached the subject of food very differently. Weston’s up-close images of vegetables and sweeping views of ranches and vineyards offer a picturesque vision of food production, whereas Álvarez Bravo’s photographs of eateries and public celebrations, among other instances of small-scale production and consumption, center on individuals and their day-to-day encounters with food and drink.
