Close Circles: A Portrait of Galka Scheyer as the Artist's Friend
Galka Scheyer was one of the most adventurous female art impresarios of the 20th century. In 1924, she moved from Germany to California to promote the modern, abstract art of the Blue Four: Lyonel Feininger, Alexei Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. She energized a broad and diverse constituency to share her passion for such art by organizing exhibits, lecturing, and educating both children and adults in art and art making. In this lecture, Williams Sander explores the nature of her close ties with supporters and friends, including the Blue Four, and with the artists and cultural figures she met in America, including John Cage, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Edward Weston, Beatrice Wood and prominent members of the Hollywood film industry, among others.
