Virtual Tour: Holy Family with Music-Making Angels, c. 1520

In this video, Associate Curator Maggie Bell spotlights Holy Family with Music-Making Angels (c. 1520), a spectacular textile depicting the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus on a throne. An example of a “golden tapestry,” a type of weaving produced in Brussels at the end of the 15th and early 16th centuries, Bell shares how the weavers used metallic thread and the unexpected location of gold within the tapestry.

Holy Family with Music-Making Angels (c. 1520) is on view in Gold: Enduring Power, Sacred Craft, October 25, 2025–February 16, 2026.
