Nude on Blue Cushion Beside a Fireplace
1925
Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954)
Not on View

In many ways, the graphic work of Henri Matisse recalls his work in other media. Attention to the decorative surface, interest in the nude female, and the telescoping of depth in his spatial arrangements are consistent throughout the artist’s work, whether on canvas or paper. Because this black and white lithograph is devoid of the Frenchman’s characteristically vibrant palette, a softer, easier, sensibility is put forth. The curvilinear forms of the molding on the fireplace and of the fabric draped over the chair echoes the curves of the nude. Her upraised arms and direct stare (a trope found repeatedly in his paintings and sculpture of the time) present a confident sensuality and a body exposed.
