Wooded Italianate Landscape
1690
Jan Baptist Huysmans (Flemish, 1654-1716)
Not on View

Northern European artists and their patrons were enthralled by the imagined, sunny landscapes of Italy. Contemplating the peninsula’s ancient culture and varied terrain provided a romantic alternative to the flat landscapes and cloudy skies of the Low Countries. In this bucolic scene, a cluster of majestic trees leads to open vistas, and a rich play of light and clouds adds tectonic and visual interest. A sandy road that begins in the lower center of the composition invites us to follow a path leading past figures dressed all’antica (in the ancient manner) and picturesque ruins. Huysmans’s landscape offered viewers the opportunity to travel without leaving home. Hung on a large wall at eye level, it gave the impression of looking out a window, virtually enlarging the space of the room and inviting viewers to experience the tranquil spirit of an idealized, country life.
