Green Realeau Form with Red Cube

Not on View

Charles Mattox trained as an artist and technician in the Federal Art Project in New York under sculptor David Smith before moving to Los Angeles and continuing with the FAP under Stanton Macdonald-Wright. After pursuing painting, the Kansas–born artist settled on sculpture, fostering an aesthetic based on kinetic energy and the machine. Mattox’s works explore movement, and his one lithograph published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop suggests the same. The back-and-forth sway of a green and red geometric form is suggested by the lighter tones to the right and left of the central shape, as though the blur of the object’s movement has been caught on paper. Mattox printed the work at the University of New Mexico under the direction of Garo Antreasian, Tamarind’s first technical director. The lithograph, along with a handful of others printed there—Antreasian’s among them—is considered part of the Tamarind catalogue and bears the chops of both Tamarind and the University of New Mexico.
