During the late 1960s, the printshop at Tamarind was often filled with Los Angeles–based artists who nurtured the development of the local art scene. But the workshop continued to grant fellowships to artists from outside of the city and country, continuing its mission of spreading the message of printmaking. One such recipient was Salvador Bru, an artist and illustrator who was born and raised in Valencia, Spain, and who later moved to Barcelona to establish himself as a painter. There he was introduced to L’Art Informel, the European equivalent of abstract expressionism, and he began to develop the calm but dynamic style for which he is best known. In the 22 prints he pulled at Tamarind, he used a spray gun and the blended-inking method (in which more than one color is placed on a roller to create a rainbow effect) to transmit his gentle, slightly surreal compositions.
