By the time Richard Diebenkorn returned to Tamarind as a guest artist, eight years after his fellowship in 1962, he had settled, both physically and artistically, into the oceanside landscape of Southern California. In 1966 he accepted a professorship at UCLA, a move that marked the definitive end to his figurative work. In the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica, Diebenkorn turned his eyes outward, abstracting the views of land and sea that surrounded the studio where he would remain for the next 25 years. From this perch, Diebenkorn brilliantly captured the quiet tonal subtleties of light, air, earth and water.
