Performing Animals in Goya's Prints
Animals occupy a central place in all four of Francisco de Goya’s print series, from tightrope-walking horses and ferocious bulls to humorous donkeys and screeching owls. Goya was fascinated by animals, most importantly their relationship to humans and their potential to convey symbolic meaning. Goya blurred this animal-human connection by creating fantastical beasts, clothing people in animalistic costumes and representing animals with humanlike qualities or engaged in humanlike activities. This lecture explores such themes by examining key performing animals in Goya’s prints. MORE INFO

The Transformation of Goya's Art into Music
Learn more about Francisco de Goya’s influence on music as pianist Dr. Eva Schaumkell, joined by soprano Anastasia Malliaras, performs a selection of works from Enrique Granados’s Goyescas and Tonadillas. Granados drew inspiration from Goya’s artwork for his Goyescas solo piano suite (1911), even setting to music specific artworks, such as the etching Love and Death from Los Caprichos and the painting El Pelele (The Straw Manikin). He felt that the Tonadillas—published in 1913, with vocals written by Fernando Periquet—were a kind of document for the Goyescas that the composer referred to as a picturesque song. Both sets of pieces were written concurrently and are thematically interwoven, ultimately creating Granados’s defining masterworks in the Spanish piano and vocal repertoire. MORE INFO
