Bettina Brendel

Born in Luneburg, Germany, Bettina Brendel (b. 1922) trained in the fine arts at the Schmilinsky School of Art and the Landeskunstschule Hamburg (now the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg) before moving to Los Angeles in 1953. For this exhibition, she displayed 12 abstract oil paintings and 8 collages. The largest oil painting, Sequence, measured 40 by 120 inches. In a statement about the works included in the exhibitions, Brendel announced that her practice worked toward “the transcendence of matter, a transposing of weight, a breaking of the surface into multiple animated particles, which contract and expand, to form a new visual universe.”
